CÓRDOVA

snow-covered village in foothills of the mountains

Founded by settlers expanding from the Chimayó valley, Córdova became famous as the home of the Córdova School of woodcarving pioneered by José Dolores López in the 1920s. Instead of painting his bultos (traditional statues of saints), he carved them intricately and left them unpainted, making striking use of the natural grain and unusual shapes of local woods such as juniper, aspen, ash, and cedar. This style is still carried on by his descendants.
